Allergenome S.L. is the first spin-off company of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the field of Agricultural Sciences. It was established in 2004, one year after the Plant Reproductive Biology research group filed its first patent for incorporating allergens from different olive varieties into vaccines for allergic patients, thereby enabling the personalization of patient treatment.
Driven by four partners—three researchers and one clinical specialist—‘Allergenome’ is the result of decades of research on olive pollen proteins conducted by the Plant Reproductive Biology Group at the Estación Experimental del Zaidín (CSIC) in Granada, led by Dr. Juan de Dios Alché.
The researchers’ initial work focused on the protein Ole e 1, the first allergen identified in olive pollen. After several assays, we found that, in addition to being involved in pollen germination, this molecule was the main cause of pollen allergy.
Building on this discovery, the researchers who are members of the company focused our attention on olive varieties, of which there are approximately 250 in Spain alone (and between 2,000 and 3,000 worldwide). Numerous scientific publications from the group support the finding that the content of this protein differs among varieties. These differences are not only quantitative but also qualitative, with Ole e 1 proteins showing differential reactivity across olive varieties—including proteins with no or low allergenic reactivity.
Based on these results, we filed our first patent in 2003, aimed at the preparation of vaccines using pollen extracts from different olive varieties, thereby also paving the way for the development of personalized treatments for each patient. Since then, the company has generated a total of five patents and has developed a range of diagnostic kits aimed at allergists. It is worth noting that its business plan is based on the licences signed on 24 November 2004, 30 May 2005 and 3 July 2006, respectively, for patents ES200100995, ES200500047 and ES200100995, owned by the CSIC, for the development and commercialization of new products.
